They Never Told Me This Would Happen in Marketing 101

A few months ago, I decided to do some door-knocking in my neighborhood and hand out a current market report compared to 6 months ago.  I went out about 4 times in two months’ time and distributed about 300 market reports.

Folks would typically take the market report and politely thank me for it except for the 4th time when I actually had 4 conversations!  In one of those conversations, I was asked a real estate question that I answered based on a certain perspective I had from prior experience.  Three months later, I found out more information about it and wanted to share it with this gentleman, so I swung by his home one afternoon and he was standing on his front porch as someone was leaving his home.  I walked up and asked if he remembered me and he said that he did.  I introduced myself as “Carla the Realtor” that had stopped by a few months ago and he said, “Yes, I was just looking at your card the other day!”

I proceeded to share the new information I had with them about his question he had previously and as I was doing this, he started looking through his wallet.  Finally, he said that he thought my card was in there, but he couldn’t find it.  I offered to give him a new card which he happily accepted.  Then…he remembered where he saw my card, “On the piano was where I last saw it!”

I asked, “Do you play the piano?” And he said, “I plunk around on it a little.”  I shared that my mom was a piano teacher when I was a young girl and so I played a little bit myself.  He went in the house and came back with a beautiful long Native American Wooden Flute which he proudly played for me.  It had a deep, rich, warm tone that was absolutely beautiful.  His wife came out while he was playing and he very lovingly introduced her.  We talked for a little bit and found out she played the piano as well!

He told me that he had played with a musical group at his church previously that consisted of guitars and violins, but they all moved away.  I told him that I played the violin and guitar and maybe I could play with him someday.  He told me he loved the violin.  I then told him that my son and his fiancé would be over on Saturday, and though I couldn’t promise anything, there was a possibility of us coming back to play with him.

Right before I left that day, he told me that his mother ‘n’ law was living with them and was on hospice and he and his wife rarely went anywhere due to their caregiving duties.  He shared that she had a well-maintained home that they were ready to sell and he had planned to give me a call very soon to get the house sold.

After we finished lunch on Saturday, I asked my son and his fiancé if they had any plans and if not, would they be willing to go to this gentleman’s house and play our instruments with him.  They were both very willing, so my son and I planned to play our violins and his fiancé agreed to play guitar.

This man was absolutely delighted when we showed up with our instruments and welcomed him into our musical circle.  Music has a way of bringing people together and makes an impression on the mind.  I look forward to helping this family with their real estate needs, but even more so, I will never forget the expressions on his face as I knew we made his day!  As we were leaving, I asked my son if he would be willing to play a piece on the piano before we left, and he was happy to do so.  I hope you, the reader, will enjoy these two pieces that I am sharing with you today.
